Of course it’s imprudent to simply wave such things away! But in the name of The Science, qualified prognostications with a supremely unlikely worst case scenario (near total inaction/lack of technological development/deindustrialization) are being swallowed into panic politics.

And a panic politics, at that, where various relatively more decisive actions are ruled more or less completely off the table. It’s irresponsible, it’s a dark fantasy, it discredits prudent caution, and if undermines the very science it so often purports to worship

Climate change is certainly an existential threat to civilizations that live on islands. Getting hung up on the word existential as a way to poo poo climate change seems like a weird thing to do.
