You don’t know that, no one knows that, and claiming anyone could know that is foolish.

And your very tweet show that you realize this: “could end the basis of civilization.” What does that even mean?

I think climate scientists are more trustworthy in terms of gauging likely outcomes than centrist and conservative pundits.

Right. Given that we have ten years left on Earth we’d better get on with EMPing China and building 1k nuclear power plants, science’s replication and causation crisis notwithstanding

Which climate scientist says we have 10 years left on earth? This conversation would be more productive if you engage with what people actually write.

Climate scientists, in my reading, neither say that we have 10 years left nor that climate change is likely to destroy the basis of human civilization. They say that it's a big, hopefully manageable problem that has some severe long-tail risks.

Yes, my point being that the claim “following out today’s probable trend line with insignificant changes to current practices likely spells disaster within several generations” is considerably milder and more attenuated than what Left Activists Who Accept Science are pitching.

“following out today’s probable trend line with insignificant changes to current practices likely spells disaster within several generations” is something that should concern us. Unless we think that future generations have no claim on the living. Which is very un-conservative.

Of course it’s imprudent to simply wave such things away! But in the name of The Science, qualified prognostications with a supremely unlikely worst case scenario (near total inaction/lack of technological development/deindustrialization) are being swallowed into panic politics.

And a panic politics, at that, where various relatively more decisive actions are ruled more or less completely off the table. It’s irresponsible, it’s a dark fantasy, it discredits prudent caution, and if undermines the very science it so often purports to worship

Climate change is certainly an existential threat to civilizations that live on islands. Getting hung up on the word existential as a way to poo poo climate change seems like a weird thing to do.
