I hate that "sovereign is he who decides on the exception" is a better analysis of politics than almost any American in the past century but what can you do?

Agamben does much more interesting things with this notion than Schmitt ever did.

FYI Schmitt has also been quoted in the “reasoning” of Venezuela’s Supreme Court, a handpicked body totally dependent on the dictator, Maduro. Schmitt can be used to justify overturning norms when facing an enemy.

Schmittzkrieg is an intellectual style. 'Sovereign is he who decides on the exception' is smart, and I noticed it's smart before you did (interlocutor). So I get to be sovereign and barrel right through whatever the hell you are arguing that I don't like.

A key point of entry into US thought centered around Derrida’s seminars collected as The Politics of Friendship, which were a meditation (indirect) on Paul de Man’s own Nazi past.

At that point, there was a broader reappraisal of Heidegger and Schmitt (both of whom were also profoundly relevant to Straussians) and their intellectual legacy.
