Trump deserves to be condemned for a lack of reflection on the unfairness of the system that allowed him to escape a military draft that sent poorer men to injury, trauma and death. But on its own terms, what he's saying here is humanly understandable and true.https://twitter.com/AliRogin/status/1136241233062481922 …

Good morning! If you're just waking up in the US, here's what President Trump said overnight about why he wouldn't have wanted to serve in Vietnam: "Well, I was never a fan of that war. I’ll be honest with you. I thought it was a terrible war, I thought it was very far away..."

Yes, but it's also widely inconsistent with what seems to be his administrations push for war with Iran.

I'd be more persuaded of this point if there were any evidence he ever protested against or criticized the war at the time.

He could have had the courage of his convictions: he could have gone to Canada, he could have refused induction and gone to jail, he could have applied for conscientious objector status. Instead he or his dad paid a doctor to get him off. No excuses, for him, please.

No. It isn’t. What he is saying here is selfish & denies the responsibilities of citizenship. We are required to serve the collective good whether we agree with it or not. Become a conscientious objector or renounce your citizenship. Trump never made any of these hard choices.

It’s weird because he’s right in not wanting to go fight an unjustified war a far off land, and yet now he fetishizes the military and empowers the most violent interventionists around. (I guess being dumb and senile will do that to you.)

The system “allowed him to escape”? Aren’t you omitting the part about paying for a false medical report—faking a disability—to avoid serving?

There are also his lies about military funding -- his military budget is pretty much comparable to what Obama had been spending.

Not really, though! He's basically claiming he opposed the war on moral grounds, suggesting that he would have fought in WWII because it was morally right. Does that sound like Trump to you? It's humanly understandable to not want to get killed but that's not what he's saying.

He's president of the US, responsible for thousands of men and women fighting overseas. What if they thought the war they were fighting in was terrible? This is a dereliction of duty.
