David writes well on conservative victories. And at the Corner I wonder if there isn’t a simple reason behind Evangelical optimism and Catholic doubt. https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/ https://twitter.com/DavidAFrench/status/1135969781213990914 …

The numbers for vocations are much worse. Priests per person way down. Up until my early childhood most American Catholics would at least interact with religious from time to time, nuns, friars, monks. Now I’d venture the vast majority of baptized Catholics never do.

Weird that that isn’t happening to the same degree in faiths where women can be priests, ministers etc, where there’s no celibacy requirement, where the social teachings have changed since the 19th century, etc

But that’s offset by immigrants and larger families of everyone but NH whites. Plus, the Catholic Church in the US isn’t trying to convert non-Catholics. And the vast majority of sexual abuse victims in the US are NH whites, which hurts retention of NHW.

The numbers for disaffection are stunning. And immigrants come in and start converging toward that rate of disaffection. Moveing the members of a shrinking Church around don’t make the shrinking go away.
