Comics folks, especially those with an interest in history: Which books, esp reprints, were fundamental to the rise of direct-market comics retail in the 1980's after the decline of head shops? Cerebus, DKR, Watchmen, L&R, what else?

His name is prominent on some Wikipedia pages from which I’ve been cribbing. ATM this is a pit stop in a longer essay about a creator but it seems like a profitable topic for a full-blown piece of its own.

When I started working at Marvel in 1982, the DM already accounted for 15% of its sales. By 1990 that was 85%, so the 80s were very important to the growth of the DM, but 15% is well beyond the beginning. So I’d argue with “rise,” still.
