The amount of sci-fi and fantasy being referenced in the Ahmari-French discourse is astounding. This Dreher post links to people quoting The Two Towers and Children of Dune and Game of Thrones in sequential paragraphs respectively https://blog.ayjay.org/ahmari-revisited/ … https://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/ahmari-french-fighting-words/ …pic.twitter.com/XBbc57AYRQ

I think the sci-fi & fantasy becoming the lingua franca of political discourse extends beyond conservatives. I mean look at Resistance Liberals & Harry Potter or Chapo & Dune. These genre are often openly ideological in a way mimetic literature isn't.

It wasn't that long ago that the US was at war with the "Mahdi Army." Dune is mimetic literature.

Dune took that from Islam, not vice versa. Mahdi is Arabic for messiah.

Yeah and look how many times we have to keep telling ALL the Democrats that the laughter of Mordor will be our only reward if we quarrel?

Modern day Pop culture influence ideologies much more than stale humanities like Shakespeare.

It's not the genres that are ideological. It's a cultural appeal that lends itself to allusion and hermeneutics. Nobody uses works like [checking Pulitzers] "A Visit from the Goon Squad" or "The Goldfinch" because they lack the popularity and possibility of sci-fi/fantasy.

I think it was Wolfe that said something something along the lines of this: Only in Sci-fi [and fantasy] could someone say their world was destroyed and have it be true both metaphorically and literally. That's what gives the genre its power.

While it's possible that Wolfe said something to this effect, I recalled this passage from Delany's essay 'Science Fiction and "Literature"–or, The Conscience of the King', which has much the same thrust.pic.twitter.com/0zwkOOHrFx
