I’ve defended Peterson *against misrepresentations of his views.* I’m not sure I’ve written about the views themselves. And in that same vein it seems like you’re assuming facts not in evidence here unless there’s some other account of the Hungary meeting? It may be a

You’ve forgotten how, in the midst of deploring how I was ruining life for honest journalists with my piece on Peterson and IDW, you suggested in response that Peterson was providing young men with an "alternative to the racist alt-right."pic.twitter.com/pn4TqneFgl

But to the actual point: when you say that his meeting with Orban could have been innocent. If I meet with David Duke and we chat about the problem of "rootless cosmopolitanism," it would be a bit rich for me to afterwards protest that I was merely complaining about modern anomie

Similarly, when you meet with a notorious illiberal demagogue political leader, who has forced a major university to flee the country, imposed political controls on the rest, taken over academic funding and banned the teaching of gender studies, to deplore "political correctness"

and if you've a bit of a track record yourself on the topic, I think it would beggar credulity for you to then claim that you didn't perhaps know exactly what you were up to, or to insist on your continued adherence to the norms of open academic debate.

Now of course: you are at liberty to disagree. And I would indeed encourage you to investigate further. Perhaps there has indeed been some gross misinterpretation of the meeting, that has yet to be corrected. It might do you no harm to look at Hungary and what has been happening

to provide at the least, a little alternative context to your frequent writings on the academy, and to confound critics like myself who find your take on efforts to control academic speech to be one-sided and myopic.

And indeed, were you then to write a piece and to publish it in that Koch funded series, it might serve double duty by putting an end to those persistent and scurrilous suggestions that their decision to fund this series might not have been altogether disinterested.

The Atlantic just published this https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/06/george-soros-viktor-orban-ceu/588070/ … So it wouldn’t make any sense for me to spend time on a deep dive in Hungary generally. But I will see if I can find out more about the substance of this particular JP meeting. On the David Duke comparison:

I think most intellectuals would treat an invite to meet with a head of state while they’re in a country to do an event as different than a meeting with a member of a fringe hate group. And it seems plausible to me that JP doesn’t know much about Orban at all. What’s more...

Wouldn’t Googling Orban make you MORE likely to accept the invitation? He doesn’t strike me as the type whose invitations can be declined, you know? I guess the lesson is don’t go to Hungary in the first place.
