According to twins studies between one-third and one-half of political alignment is linked to genetics; that is most of us are born somewhat wired to be liberal or conservative. If this is the case we need to build bridges as much as possible. It’s not just info or culture.

Give me two Big Five personality traits (Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness), and I can tell you with high confidence how liberal/conservative you are on social issues. Add ethnicity, and I can tell you your party ID. Personality and ethnicity are highly heritable.

you are saying that if you ask people a number of questions about their preferences you can make some inferences about other preferences??? this is astonishing

The claim is that, across societies, human beings display a distinct set of categorizable orientations to the world, which are shaped largely by genetics and early childhood experience...

These orientations are pre-ideological, and the partisan/policy preferences they engender will vary based on cultural context. But an aversion for change and uncertainty, and preference for order, will typically draw a person towards conservative/reactionary politics...

Logically speaking, people averse to change & uncertainty should be highly drawn to environmentalism & climate change activism. But I doubt if that's the case. So there is something mediating between "personality" and "ideology"

Of course! (Although, in point of fact, nativist environmentalism is a thing https://www.thenation.com/article/environment-climate-eugenics-immigration/ …).Positing the existence of personality types does not require denying the role of mediating agents/institutions.

I think it means change and uncertainty for me and my in-group. Responding to climate change, for example, means changing how I behave, and that’s where the discomfort arises. It all comes down to not being willing to question myself or my group. We are always right.
