This strip shows that early on Schulz felt he was being constrained by kid-focus of "Peanuts." Of course, what he discovered was he could bring in all the adult concerns he wanted (depression, unrequited love) & still use kid characters.pic.twitter.com/vO2yfoRrVu
Schulz is a good example of how narrowly political criteria are not useful for judging artists & their work. He was both very attracted to tough, butchy women & also scared of them. That made for personal unhappiness but also some great art.
Was Schultz unhappy? He seemed to be living it up in Santa Rosa...
His divorce in the early 1970s was very painful. And also the source of his best work.
