I'm not sure that "the party" was actually much stronger in 2016, despite the takes at the time. In retrospect, I think 2016 shows the power of the Clinton machine (rather than the DEM machine) to compel the consolidation that she did.

Of course, she does. But if Sanders was polling what Biden is -- and beating Trump by 10 in the polls -- she'd find a way to warm up to him. Anyway, seven months until Iowa is a long time.

The degree to which most people believe “party elites” try to control (vs influence) the nomination, and the degree to which many people believe elites actually do control the nomination, are both exponentially greater than the reality.
