I agree that most of the criticism of Haberman is overwrought & misplaced. But the core problem is that the protocols of access journalism, which are dodgy even in a normal presidency, seem grotesque when used for Trump administration.https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1133467137400557569 …

One other dynamic at work is liberals tend to over-obsess about the NY Times & its coverage. My former colleague

maybe the times could just fire their headline writers and whoever is in charge of editorials and op-eds?

Right. But the Times, as part of its team approach, chooses to publish a piece that flatters a subject in return for more access. The trade off here is not worth it for anyone-readers who are shamelessly spun, the NYT, Haberman-except for Hope Hicks

If a good citizen sees a vacuous piece with framing that favors authoritariansm, the good citizen has a responsibility to point that out and call attention to it. During "interesting" times, the responsibility is greater.

If journalists can't handle the criticism, they probably shouldn't be in the business. Alternatively, be careful what you write - especially during "interesting" times.

Why do we need insiders? What purpose do they serve? They serve no purpose but to kiss the ass of power!!

What is the purpose of a glamorous puff piece on Hicks if not to trade positive coverage for access? What is the correct term for this type of journalism?

Is it really that much of a freak-out? Or just a very, very bad headline that frames the story in a really poor way for the readers of The Times?
