I agree that most of the criticism of Haberman is overwrought & misplaced. But the core problem is that the protocols of access journalism, which are dodgy even in a normal presidency, seem grotesque when used for Trump administration.https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1133467137400557569 …

This is very true & is why I think the freak-out over Haberman is wrong-headed. Times has a variety of approaches to Trump: Haberman's beat coverage is one but there's also non-beat investigative reporting (like the great tax articles):https://twitter.com/THAToneil/status/1133478717060206593 …

One other dynamic at work is liberals tend to over-obsess about the NY Times & its coverage. My former colleague
@GrahamVyse wrote a good piece on this:https://newrepublic.com/article/146828/lefts-war-new-york-times …Show this thread

Yeah, the price is glam shots of Trump cronies and existential choice crap about obeying the law.

Hicks played a central role in routinely lying to the American people, and that’s brushed aside by Haberman in the piece. Sometimes she deserves the heat bc she should know better. It’s a tough job no doubt & she’s not the bad guy, but the public needs the truth from nytimes.
