If these results hold, Le Pen is down from the last European election, where her party got 25%. One would think that someone who accuses an entire academic discipline of cheery-picking facts would be more careful to present evidence in a way that contextualizes it.https://twitter.com/Yascha_Mounk/status/1132709806559490048 …

As feared, Le Pen got the most votes in France, closely followed by Macron. The two traditional center-left and center-right parties, which once split the lion's share of the vote, will get about 15% between them. pic.twitter.com/5PBEfRTkbc

The larger narrative of "rise of the populist right" isn't really holding for Europe as a whole (although as always much variation in individual countries). See this thread for a nuanced discussion:https://twitter.com/JeremyCliffe/status/1132711427817594882 …

Mounk wrote this below in 2016. Ironically, he grew so fearful of the first that he has started plunging headlong into the second himself. Yascha Mounk knows best, and the rest of us - left or right alike - don't know anything. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/08/the_week_democracy_died_how_brexit_nice_turkey_and_trump_are_all_connected.html …pic.twitter.com/DX9moeGePS

Funny for Mounk to now profess such concern with the normalization of the AfD when he had no problem speaking alongside AfD leader Marc Jongen at a conference in 2017 https://medium.com/@arendt_center/crises-of-democracy-photo-gallery-bfe197371f0c …https://twitter.com/Yascha_Mounk/status/1132710541334466560 …

In Germany, the center-right CDU comes top. The Greens are cementing their position as the biggest party on the left. The SPD is, once again, at a record low of 16%. The far-right AfD "only" has 11%. For now, Germany appears to be one of the most stable countries in Europe. pic.twitter.com/Sc04nxb7dl
