2. Kirby was part of an excellent "Masters of American Comics" exhibit in 2005 at the Hammer Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art (LA) but as far as I know has never had a big solo American show. That's kinds of strange since he's so influential an American artist.

3. Kirby created the visual & narrative template of Marvel comics (and hence the current wave of Hollywood blockbuster) but also had an influence on fine artists (Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein), novelists (Chabon, Lethem, GRR Martin) & filmmakers (Lucas, del Toro).

Just guessing but maybe American capitalism/exceptionalism favoured the image of the marketer/individual genuis Stan Lee over the artist Jack Kirby?

It's a tragedy that distorts our understanding of the creative process because so much of the best in Comics came from collaboration between numerous artists and writers, who often drew on archetypes from American history and culture

My pops grew up reading Kirby comics, when I was in my comic book phase he made sure to show me a bunch of his more classic work. I always thought The Silver Surfer comics were especially epic. I would definitely go to this show if it was in NYC.

Because the cultural distance of being European allows them to view comic book art as American art, whereas Americans like to think of it as pop culture and art as something else
