      1. It's really worth paying attention to Biden's words here. “Some say Democrats are angry...well I don’t believe it.” We have an unaddressed climate crisis, abortion rights under siege, migrant kids detained & dying, maybe war with Iran but Uncle Joe is not angry.https://twitter.com/Olivianuzzi/status/1129720696702230528 …

You should consider analyzing what happened in 2018 not just what happened in 2016.

2018 victories were fuelled by resistance anger against Trump. Biden now wants to tamp down on that anger in the name of "unity."

This is really inaccurate. You should actually look at what happened in swing districts.

Indeed lots of dems in swing districts campaigned on - gasp - bipartisanship.

Swing districts are not the whole of America. To treat all of America as a swing district is to pursue a campaign message that will demobilize key Democratic voting blocs. I really don't see the point of repeating all the folly that elected Trump.

The inability to see the difference between 2016 and 2019 is one of the main reasons twitter pundits are so out of touch with Dem voters. Lots of people thought Trump couldn’t win. Now he’s there. That fact changes a lot of behavior.

The assumption here is that progressive voters, because they hate Trump so much, will hold their nose & vote for Biden even if he runs on milquetoast restorationist message. Possibly true but not a good recipe for a politics to deal with big issues like climate & courts.

Set aside whether that's true re climate and the courts for a moment. For now what is pretty clearly fueling Biden is belief he's most likely to beat Trump. Beating Trump is by definition a predicate for **any** positive change. So it makes sense to address that issue, no?

Hillary Clinton had the worst electoral college results for a Democrat since 1988. To replicate her message (Trump's grossness, outreach to GOP) with a candidate who is older & less in touch with moment seems risky! Could work, but it's a real risk.

It is, but we do need to remember that the current president has been given a term, and the current numbers are nowhere close to what he needs. It'll tighten, it always does, but 2020 will be an even more definite referendum on him than 2018 was.

Biden is broadly popular and trusted. Years of attacks on Hillary -- and some stuff she did -- led many prospective Dem voters not to trust her.

@armandodkos Hillary Clinton was actually a winning candidate. If not for the cheating, perhaps an all-time landslide, and certainly the electoral college. Biden has a lot of dirt that is obscured by proximity to Obama. Hope his rivals dig it up before the general election.

On its face thats a decent logic. But current polls show Biden clearly & consistently doing better agst Trump than any other Democratic candidate. In most cases dramatically so. That's not dispositive but its pretty indicative. And must weigh agst what is really just a theory.
