Yup—great thread. Particular irony is that even the voters that Biden is presumably targeting—suburban centrists, mostly women—**are very very angry**!!! Biden is the last non angry person. Biden says Trump is a monster, but that nobody is angry about that. Makes no sense.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1129774162485174272 …

      1. It's really worth paying attention to Biden's words here. “Some say Democrats are angry...well I don’t believe it.” We have an unaddressed climate crisis, abortion rights under siege, migrant kids detained & dying, maybe war with Iran but Uncle Joe is not angry. https://twitter.com/Olivianuzzi/status/1129720696702230528 …

Biden said he wanted to pull Trump out behind the alley and beat him up!

Ok, he can get angry too. But, based on the speech excerpts @HeerJeet cited, he’s decided he’s no longer angry, nor are most Democratic voters. About the latter, I suspect he’s wrong, regardless of their ideology.

I feel like the insights about candidate affect you often make might apply here.

[pulls out massive scrapbook of printed-out Yeselson tweets] the idea of appealing to voters in the middle with a calm, friendly affect -- usually you apply this to Republicans, but it works both ways

Yeah...that might be right. (Who am I to criticize my own wisdom?) I think the fear some of us have with Biden is that it’s not clear whether he really thinks he can straighten all this out over coffee with McConnell or not.

Maybe he wants to do both? Beat up Trump behind the alley, then have McConnell over for a coffee at Satriale's? (In seriousness I agree it's important to know if he believe his own nonsense.)

He wants to do both because his view is the problem is merely Trump's personal grossness & unfitness. That's a bad analysis on Biden's part because Trump is a product of deep-seated trends in GOP which is why Trump has been embraced by GOP.

Well, Jon has been writing a version of that (correct) analysis for years. There’s a way to synthesize the rancid, special sauce Trump brings to the table with the “typical” rancid, special sauce of the contemporary GOP, But Biden doesn’t want to put that together.

Agree that's the proper synthesis and also that Biden doesn't make it. It's a symptom that he's running a campaign of pure nostalgia, rather than coming to grips with moment. He could win the presidency but I don't see how nostalgia presidency will move politics forward.

This kind of call is like placing bets on horses months before the race. Biden's just gettin' started, as is everyone else.

Yeah. He reminds me of both Dole in ‘96 (aging, bi-partisan Senate veteran) and Mondale in ‘84 (against GOP right, but rejecting a re-thinking of basic Democratic messaging and political strategy.) Biden more likely to win than they were because Trump is so weak. But weak plan.

This is moving the goal posts from the original claim of demobilizing Democrats though. By distinguishing Trump from the rank and file GOP, Biden actually has more space for angry woodshed talk.
