Yup—great thread. Particular irony is that even the voters that Biden is presumably targeting—suburban centrists, mostly women—**are very very angry**!!! Biden is the last non angry person. Biden says Trump is a monster, but that nobody is angry about that. Makes no sense.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1129774162485174272 …

Which is also why 90% of the supposed conservative Trump critics will come around to Trump in 2020. They only have to get themselves past his personal grossness to embrace a platform they already supprt.

I just assume that Biden is grading on a scale that includes Strom Thurmond, Phil Gramm, Jeremiah Denton and Trent Lott. He didn't think that sort of grossness would dominate the GOP, and doesn't really think it's in charge by dint of anything more than a fluke of fate.

Well, Jon has been writing a version of that (correct) analysis for years. There’s a way to synthesize the rancid, special sauce Trump brings to the table with the “typical” rancid, special sauce of the contemporary GOP, But Biden doesn’t want to put that together.

Putting them together—which allows for plenty of discussion of Trump’s unique corruption, mental instability, cruelty, and sheer ignorance—is the correct analytical and normative position. But seeing Trump in office (rather than as a candidate) will help Biden’s case politically.
