This is an interesting point. There's a tension between Martin's project (to subvert the Manichean tendency of epic fantasy to divide the world between good guys & bad guys) with the desire of his audience to divide characters into teams of good & evil.https://twitter.com/AdamSerwer/status/1127762595312803841 …

That was more true to the core of the books—good and evil exist in people at the same time, and violence isnt nearly as heroic and awesome as you think it is—then every other episode this season.

I’m not sure this is right. Dany wasn’t simultaneously good and evil she went right to unambiguously evil.

I liked the episode a lot, but I think @AdamSerwer isn't addressing the legit criticism of it, i.e., there hasn't been enough writing devoted to Dany's descent into madness.

If that was over a few episodes, Varys' betrayal would seem more sympathetic. Having it play out and having her go nuts in the same episode allows for more WTF? than it otherwise would. I think folks will come to like this one more after they're over their stages of grief.

The idea of Daenarys heel turn is fine. The execution of having her go from helping save humanity from undead hordes to ruthless genocidal maniac in two god damn episodes is absurd.

I think the issue is this show basically hasnt cared about that subversion since Season 4. And now that its back its very jarring and feels sloppy and unearned

literally the only reason i got into GOT was because of the subversion of the manichean tendency in so many epic stories. it has been fun seeing how many people who got into it without realizing that subversive aspect - reminds me a lot of mad men fandom

Awesome. Since I already got plenty of that in Wheel of Time, I feel more validated in my aversion to the ASoIaF books.

True. Nevertheless this episode was still a writing convenience in many ways, in its reliance on “women’s emotional fragility” makes them vulnerable trope.
