there is an element of that. plus there was limited reels to go round cinemas, so they did big cities and towns first and then smaller towns. you may travel to see it in a big town, then watch it again closer to home.

Why do we measure this in dollars made and not tickets sold? Wouldn’t that be an easier way to judge current films against past ones?

because it’s an industry metric that’s only unintentionally become relevant to public interest and tickets aren’t sold at the same price
