Hmm. To play the devil's advocate: isn't Plato's Socrates mostly a fictional creation? And doesn't Plato quote him as an authority (not to mention win all the debates)?https://twitter.com/HartmanAndrew/status/1124266964438929409 …

Just reading Any Rand's essays on philosophy in which she frequently quotes John Galt as if he's a reliable source & as if quoting your own fictional character is a totally normal thing to do.

Rand probably thought that's what she was doing, she wasn't really known for modesty.

Socrates was (I know you know this) a real person. Other famous Athenians besides Plato also wrote about him. So, Plato could expect that his readers would know whether he was taking liberties in his characterization of Socrates. 1/2

That said, as Plato got older and further developed his own distinctive philosophy, his Socrates became increasingly a sock puppet for his own views. In the early dialogues though, Socrates was Socrates. 2/2

The construction of Socrates as authority is complicated — e.g. in the Gorgias

Isn't the consensus that Plato's earlier writings, particularly things about Socrates (like the Apology), are more straightforward depictions, while in the later writings Socrates is merely Plato's literary device for conveying his own views?

plato never wrote his self-insert character into a sexual assault to prove the righteousness of his philosophy, i have to say the student surpassed the master here
