Socrates was (I know you know this) a real person. Other famous Athenians besides Plato also wrote about him. So, Plato could expect that his readers would know whether he was taking liberties in his characterization of Socrates. 1/2

That said, as Plato got older and further developed his own distinctive philosophy, his Socrates became increasingly a sock puppet for his own views. In the early dialogues though, Socrates was Socrates. 2/2

Isn't the consensus that Plato's earlier writings, particularly things about Socrates (like the Apology), are more straightforward depictions, while in the later writings Socrates is merely Plato's literary device for conveying his own views?
