seems like a duty of Congress regardless of outcome or tactical advantage/disadvantage

Here's the thing. If we don't stop measuring everything by its impact on the next election, we will never get significantly better government. It matters in the long term that Congress polices potentially illegal presidential behaviour.

But that's just the problem. The Senate won't convict.

Even the Devin Nunes House Intelligence Committee (April 2018 report) concluded that Russia had attacked the 2016 elections. Politically - why not try to fix that legislatively, and nail Trump if he impedes that?

1. DJT's poll numbers go down when the news focuses on his wacko evil 2. 40 House seats won by the Democrats show there was hunger to provide oversight Add those together and you've got a recipe for sinking Trump (ym'sh) OTOH, 5 minutes-at-time oversight nonsense doesn't work

Impeachment should be attempted, but it shouldn't be about Trump's 2020 chances: It's to expose the mental convolutions the Republicans in Congress are prepared to go through to justify not impeaching him, and to take that before the electorate. Getting rid of Trump isn't enough.

Imagine Trump campaigning with "I did nothing wrong, even the Hateful Democrats didn't try to impeach me. No Impeachment, No Collusion, No Obstruction."

Most people won't read the Mueller report. There is preponderance of evidence of collusion & beyond a reasonable doubt obstruction. Impeachment will televise the many facts in a dramatic setting. Gives a better chance to beat Senators who won't convict.

I prefer impeachment w/o removal -- don't ever want Pence as pres. But if Clinton deserved impeachment, Trump surely does and it will always be a stain on him. Don't really care whether it hurts his reelection. Great if it does, but surely it won't help him so I want revenge.

I don't think so: - It will publicize more his misdeeds. - The 22 GOP Sens up for election in 2020 will want to distance themselves. No way it helps them. - His party will divide further. - More information will likely come to light.
