I think it'd be hard to overemphasize what an absolute dick Ware was in that introduction. This was in 2007 so, you know - he was like 40. It has really influenced my opinion of him, just as a person #msinger

The other thing that
#msinger goes in on Ware (as editor) for is including too much autobio/realistic fiction, which "reinforces a hierarchy of genre" I mean, it's true, but: genre hierarchy + women's marginalization in comics canon hardly comes down to Chris Ware3 replies 1 retweet 11 likesShow this thread -
In fact I'd argue that some of the people who are most responsible for that stuff are
#msinger and his colleagues in academia. He doesn't have much to say about *that* except to put down Hillary Chute, whose work he sort of misrepresents (again)pic.twitter.com/RR24GjQ59C

Chute upholds the status quo in some ways, but she has also almost singlehandedly drawn more recognition to key comics figures like Aline Kominsky Crumb and Francoise Mouly, in academia and (for AKC, at least) in general

Also wonder why
#msinger didn't look more closely at the Best American Comics series. Just for ex, Ben Katchor, the MacArthur Genius who edited it in 2017, published ~34 artists, ~5 of whom were women. (I tried to ask the series editor about it once, but you know how it is

#msinger makes it sound as Chris Ware is the only cartoonist ever to overemphasize white men, which I find odd. Why not throw in at least some mention of Raw or that whole Masters of American Comics debacle?https://hammer.ucla.edu/exhibitions/2005/masters-of-american-comics/ …1 reply 1 retweet 8 likesShow this thread -
That said, Ware's attitudes, imo, are represented correctly (and hardly limited to those anthologies). Check out the exhibit that Ware curated for the Phoneix Art Museum in 2006. (I think
#msinger talks about the show, but doesn't mention the homogeneity)pic.twitter.com/On3ymIsz9n

There's also Ware's work editing (dead) cartoonists for Fanta. Jeet Heer has described this as Ware "inventing his ancestors." I think that's right, because imo Ware is, uh, a bit of a narcissist who sees everyone in his own image. But again, he's not alone in this
