Not only that, working class whites *who actually cited class-based issues as their reason for voting* voted for Hillary. Voters who backed Trump cited immigration and terrorism as their top concerns. Not jobs or the economy.https://twitter.com/magi_jay/status/1120095783720714240 …

Doesn't this suggest that Clinton's failure was that, unlike Obama in 2008 & 2012, she didn't have a strong enough class message to overcome the traditional Republican formula (going back long before Trump) of immigration & terrorism?

I think the broader problem is that in 2016, arguably a lot like 2018, voters just weren't that focused on class messages at all. Clinton talked plenty about jobs, inequality, and the obstacles working families face. Those issues just didn't get play.

Messaging was important. 2012 Obama said Romney was a rich jerk who loves outsourcing jobs. 2016 Clinton said Trump wasn't a real billionaire and not a Paul Ryan Republican. Notice the difference?

Clinton also said Trump stiffed all his employees by refusing to pay them for the work he did, and that he inherited his money rather than earned it, but keep cherry picking quotes to justify your hate

First, Romney was more vulnerable to "outsourcing" attacks than Trump was (I don't get why folks continue to pretend they were equivalent plutocrats). Second, Dems actually did attack Trump's scamming and rip-off schemes. Third, Clinton/Ds did run against Ryan agenda in 2016.

It was a core aspect of Democratic messaging in 2012 in a way that it wasn't in 2016. I saw tons of commercials about Romney laying people off. In 2016 I saw commercials where Trump said fat women were unattractive. Frequency and emphasis matter a lot.

Clinton's problem was that her inclusive message hurt her with WWC voters because of racism. And Trump did a better job than Romney appealing to racism.

Clinton routinely messaged Trump’s scamming of his employees. These employees had a big spotlight at the convention. Why pretend Clinton didn’t run after Trump on these lines?

I seem to remember numerous Clinton ads with people saying how they had been personally cheated by Trump.
