Not only that, working class whites *who actually cited class-based issues as their reason for voting* voted for Hillary. Voters who backed Trump cited immigration and terrorism as their top concerns. Not jobs or the economy.https://twitter.com/magi_jay/status/1120095783720714240 …

I think the broader problem is that in 2016, arguably a lot like 2018, voters just weren't that focused on class messages at all. Clinton talked plenty about jobs, inequality, and the obstacles working families face. Those issues just didn't get play.
-
Why those messages didn't get the same play they do in a typical election, I don't have a definitive answer. But I think it boils down to the fact that the media treated the election like a reality show, and obsessed nonstop over Trump's morals vs Clinton's emails.

Her message, which most certainly focused on class, was swamped repeatedly by media focusing on emails.

I feel like Clinton’s biggest problem was that she was torpedoed by the director of the FBI two weeks before the election.

Your entire premise is wrong: there was no “failure.” A difference of 79,000 votes scattered in marginal amounts across several counties in three states cost Clinton the election. She won 3 million more votes overall — while fighting Russian active measures and media bias. 1/2

And that fact that Trump is an illegitimate president.

No, folks voted white instead of right. Keep it simple.

It suggests to me that the male dominated media has been using fake “economic anxiety” as an excuse for Trump’s appeal to racists and sexists.

Hillary Clinton earned more & a higher % of votes than anyone other than PBO in 2008 in 2nd highest turnout election in 50 yrs. She lost by 70k (in counties we know Russia targeted, btw). She didn't pander to "GOP formula" of inciting racism - she called white supremacists out.
