Peterson and Zizek talking religion is a good case study for why we need scholars of religion and not just random dudes who think they can pick up an academic discussion they’re eminently unqualified for.

Zizek has two PhDs in philosophy and is well respected in the discipline. If a scholar of academic Marxism is unqualified to speak on Marxism, who the hell is? You guys are, ironically, so damn intellectually lazy

Yeah ok, I forgot, since Zizek cracked a few jokes in his career, his dozens of books and articles are completely invalidated. Clearly, then, also, an absence of charisma should definitely be associated with insight, and those academics who are least charismatic are the best.

This is a good point. There is a preference for "sad knowledge" where only utterly boring people can be considered knowledgeable. This is not an opinion on Zizek since I am not qualified to tell if his interpretation of Hegel is right or not.
