Yeah, because Ezra’s whole thing is wrong. Politics is not endlessly malleable but it is pretty malleable and what I see is a preemptive disarming of any attempt to change the ground of political conflict.

You’re acting as if we didn’t just have a 2-year Special Counsel investigation that produced a detailed and convincing account of Trump’s misdeeds, and that will now result in months of follow-on hearings. What’s the evidence that the “impeachment” label will sway voters?

Do you remember anything damning, or anything at all for that matter, that came out of the actual Clinton impeachment hearings, as opposed to the Starr report? I don’t.

Question is if case against Trump is closer to Nixon than to Clinton. I think it is.

I agree. But that’s not my point. asking. In Nixon’s case, the hearings moved public opinion (and, importantly, the opinions of GOP members) because the absence of a public Special Counsel investigation meant the hearings revealed lots of new information to the public.

That’s not the case here. We’ve already had the Mueller investigation, the results of which will be picked over and made the subject of public hearings for months to come. There’s no chance of Trump’s impeachment hearings hitting the way Nixon’s did.

Those are literally all things that had no meaningful impact on Trump’s popularity.

Why do people keep saying this about the most unpopular president in the history of polling data?

Because his popularity has been extraordinarily stable all through his presidency.

His unpopularity has also been remarkable stable!

Yes - it has. The sides are set in stone. Nothing seems to make a difference.

Well, in that case, I guess why bother trying to use the tools for accountability that the constitution provides. oh well.
