Powerful @roddreher on the end of the “Neuhaus-Novak-Weigel” program for bringing about a “Christianized liberalism.” Instead, liberalism won the day and what we see is a “liberalized Christianity” that stands helpless before the flood waters.https://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/benedict-option-what-else-is-there/ …

Replying to @yhazony @roddreher
My own criticism of that group was mainly motived by a concern for the liberal side of the equation. But Rod and I agree on opposing the attempt at synthesis.

Yes. Although Neuhaus esp was quite shrewd about defining it in terms of “mere orthodoxy.” Nothing distinctively Catholic. The governing ideology could supposedly be affirmed by all devout Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and even Muslims. The real fault line was w secular America.

Replying to @DamonLinker @SWGoldman and
Because of his Lutheran background, Neuhaus thought he could mediate a Protestant/Catholic alliance: the Prots would supply the big voting base & the Catholics the brains. I disagree with it, but it wasn't an absurd program.
