It is a symbol too. And I’m happy that a Catholic cathedral can also be a symbol of medieval greatness, French history, Parisian grandeur, and even of Europe. But, if it is rebuilt it will be as a Cathedral.

Maybe I should've said "mere" symbol. It's both a symbol & a real church.

If you have been there, it is different. The liberty bell is ugly and deformed- I’d be mildly disturbed if it was on fire. Notre Dame is a beautiful architectural form.

the whole Western Civ focus from Shapiro/the alt right feels like a veiled (or subconscious) move to erase all the non-white Christian communities of the world, like Syria, North Africa/Ethiopia, Turkey etc. essentially saying this Church doesn't belong to you

Here is how my church community dealt with a historic building burning down. We rebuilt. It’s not as famous. It was sad. The new version is beautiful and honors its history. I’d expect the same with Norte Dame.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provo_Tabernacle …

Yeah, the Holy Week timing is another level of reaction and sense of loss. Not a Catholic but I feel it for the congregation.

notre dame has been a constant feature of western civilization for hundreds of years. it's the focus and backdrop of multiple works of art. who's trying to decontextualize here?
