This is shockingly ill-informed statement by McEwan. The questions he's asking have been part of science fiction from the earliest robot stories (and, really, further back going to Frankenstein & beyond).https://twitter.com/BDSixsmith/status/1117517846085537793 …

God bless him, but Ian McEwan has clearly never read any science fiction. pic.twitter.com/Yio2y2LlKf

It's not just the novels - you'd have to be completely devoid of pop culture knowledge to think this. Sure, I get if you haven't read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" but to not even have social context for Blade Runner? Come on.

Is there some obligation to read science fiction? Are people missing something essential if you miss it?

If you're going to write about a topic that has already been extensively written about, and frame it as if this is new ground that hasn't been covered, then, yes, it would be essential. I would also argue that it's as essential as reading any other form of fiction.

Jesus. Philip K. Dick was writing about precisely that, what, as much as 50 years ago?

Very shocking. Writers shouldn't live in bubbles and if they do they need to pop them.
