I feel like we've gone in a blink of an eye from people arguing "neo-liberal is a meaningless term" to "actually Bernie is a neo-lib too!" https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1117187490018885632 …

To be honest, if "Bernie is neo-lib just like us" is the convenient fiction needed to get centrists behind Bernie, then there's no problem with it.

Many of them won't get around him even if he is the nominee. That's the biggest worry.

History tells another tale. The biggest self-sabotage of the Democratic Party was in 1972 when centrists went out of their way to destroy George McGovern.

It’ll be interesting to see who gets blamed for candidate Sanders loses every state but Vermont in a redo of 1972.

Jeet, in front of a bulletin board filled with sticky notes connected by string: Thomas Eagleton never even had depression! The whole thing was set up by Carl Albert and the RAND Corporation!

Sure, Nixon was at 60% approval, but if LBJ wasn't faking "dying" of "heart problems" and could be bothered to campaign for McGovern, he might have won TWO states.

But lets be fair -- if the party hadn't of attacked McGovern I suppose he would have won Minnesota and RI. Maybe.

I assume that in this particular historical "tale", Richard Nixon was an honest man who didn't have an approval rating over 60%, and Watergate was just a random break-in

it does take a certain amount of boldness to compare Bernie to McGovern, though. I mean, McGovern at least won the primaries
