So I have been thinking about this and I wouldn’t run the grift but if I were going to advise someone to stake out a position as a marketable black conservative, I would say they should go a little left-field and position themselves as black cultural conservatives.https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1115700376383176704 …

The usual approach for black conservatives is to deploy arguments about black cultural pathology. But there is another path available. Where you presuppose the problem of structural racism but argue there is no capacity in white society to do anything about it.

Argue from the position of a conservative black nationalist, basically. “There will be no liberation from a racist society so let us turn inward and sustain the black community through hard work and recommitment to our cherished traditions and institutions.”

Think Clarence Thomas, more or less, although more flexible about state action, demanding direct assistance for the purpose of self-sufficiency. Patriarchal moralism, with a perspective of “this is how we will weather the storm against a hostile white world.”

But that tradition was black conservatives addressing a black audience. The more lucrative grift if addressing a white audience, who really just want exoneration.
