I've seen Progress Publisher stuff around -- multivolume editions of Lenin & whatnot. I thought they were run by CPUSA or at least sold through CPUSA

Ah, you were right, they were Russia-based. Judging from this brief account, I think they were part of Soviet friendship-promotion policy in the West, used during Popular Front periods (although interestingly launched in 1931, a more isolationist time):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progress_Publishers …
