      1. This is exactly right and inspires a few thoughts I have on Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman, Ulysses, literacy, FDR, Eisenhower & presidential reading.https://twitter.com/emilynussbaum/status/1113937215757877248 …

I don't care what books the candidates like, the fact that they *read books* is already an improvement on our current apocalypse. I'm easy like that.

      2. Trump is the first post-literate president. Reading is just not his thing. TV is his main medium: it's the prism through which he understands the world. This marks him off from everyone who previously held the office.

      3. Part of me is, I confess, annoyed by the performative intellectualism of Buttigieg's list of favorite books. I mean, I would rather have a social democrat who read only trashy novels to a neoliberal who read admittedly great books like Ulysses. But that's not the divide.

      4. The real divide, as McLuhan and Postman taught us, is between literacy & post-literacy, between those who can read (for whom the written word is a part of their life) and those whom other media have supplanted reading.

      5. People are saying Reagan & Bush Jr. weren't readers, but the evidence doesn't bear that out. Reagan's mostly read right wing media (Human Events, National Review, even Reader's Digest) but he clearly digested it and it formed his worldview.

      6. Bush Jr. also, the evidence suggests, dutifully read the popular histories Karl Rove and others gave him. He was still part of the world of literacy in a way that Trump is not.

      7. Some presidents have been great readers (TR, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, @dick_nixon), some more casual. But again, it doesn't really matter what they read as the fact that they did read: reading giving them habits of linear, sequential thinking & abstraction which Trump lacks.

      9. Alot the traits Trump has that some people see as symptoms of mental decline (the limited vocabulary, the non-sequitur and logical muddle, the frequent resort to slurs and crude nick-names) are more accurately seen as signs of post-literacy.

Stop. Watch videos of Trump even 3-5 years ago. His mental decline is real, not some kind of post-modern phenomenon to fit into this construct. He evidences clear signs and symptoms of some kind of progressive psycho-neurological deterioration, most likely a dementia.

I've asked a few doctors about this and it's not clear cut. I do think we need to have him do a proper medical examine, not with compromised medicos.

There's some specific cases that may indicate mental decline as a health issue, but much of the general word salad requires no further explanation than "guy who doesn't read or think deeply about many subjects is asked to speak extemporaneously at length."

Also have to factor in, even as much as DJT has delegated out authority and watches TV x amount of hours a day, it is a stressful job and chronic stress/insomnia look very similar to the kind of dementia-like deterioration. Especially from a guy who has low stress tolerance as is

There is a massive difference between making a diagnosis, and pointing out objectively concerning symptoms. Ozzy Osbourne's tremors turned out to be Parkin syndrome, not due to Parkinson's or drug abuse. Everybody noticed his "Parkinsonian" symptoms for decades.

Ppl close to him say Trump has an attention deficit (makes reading hard). Which aligns with his behavior, and if the accusations are true he abuses Adderall, then that might also explain slips like "Tim Apple" and "the oranges of the Mueller report" and his slurring episodes.

Many doctors have weighed in publicly saying it is clear cut — but most feel restrained by professional ethics. Caregivers are not. I and many, many other people who have been caregivers for their loved ones with dementia can tell you it is very clear cut. cc: @docrocktex26

I have an elderly father without dementia (well, until very recently because he's been in and out of the ICU), and it isn't obvious to me that Trump has dementia. He might. He's definitely not as sharp as he was. I think he's unfit either way.
