There was an article--maybe in TCJ?--about the importance of the American Southwest to cartoonists a while back, wasn't there? All the stuff you mention, plus other things like the Gasoline Alley trip out west, etc.

FWIW, E.C. Segar lifts the KK desert pretty much whole hog for an early pre-Popeye Thimble Theater arc (as Jeet well knows and has written about) that has a trip to the American Southwest in it.
