The key problem with the Russia story remains that there's no way Putin would acquire so idiotic an asset as Trump.

*Agents* need to be at least somewhat competent. *Assets* are routinely morons. They don’t even need to understand how they’re being used. They just need to be useful.

Okay, fair enough but I feel like Trump's unpredictability and and idiocy go beyond that of even a useful asset. There is an elective affinity between Trumpian chaos & Putin's mischief making, but I'm not sure these spy terms are the best way to get at that affinity.

If the use he seeks is damage to the reputation of the US and our political system, has an agent, witting or not, ever been more useful?

If your goal is to make America look a mess and democracy look corrupt, then Trump is a perfect asset for Putin.

Naw it's pure win with potential upside - at minimum us is run by an idiot, at best he undoes sanctions, destroys NATO, etc

I don't think Putin viewed winning with Trump the ideal outcome. Rather a crippled HRC, particularly after a crushing 2018 midterm defeat and outraged Trump being the best and most likely one. Two issues being Rs didn't agree and Comey trying to clear the decks for investigation

The term "useful idiot" comes to mind. It was supposedly coined by Vladimir Lenin to mean a person who could be used by Soviet propagandists without being privy to their goals or methods.

Trump is a chaos agent. His betrayal of America is itself the destabilizing force Putin sought & is presently using. Think of the insane amount of national energy going towards fighting the chaos & abuse Trump daily inflicts on Americans. Our work & productivity is being sapped

Jeet, first of an expendable asset doesn't have to be smart. Second, Trump is somebody who's bad leadership will compromise Putin's enemies.

Jeet, I'm sure that Putin would want an incredibly keen, cunning, deep-cover agent, prepared for decades to destroy the USA. He worked with what he had, and has done a great job.
