I mean if your point is that Weisinger’s full-frontal method of berating people was better than Lee’s false chumminess, point taken.

But I would probably take issue with your suggestion that Lee a) wasn’t a real editor; b) didn’t care about comics, at least initially

I don't think anyone besides Kane really cared abt Kanigher's intellect. He was clearly a sharp verbal guy, which was emphasized by his dickishness. Assholes often come off as smarter than they are.

It seems like he was widely loathed by everyone but his employers. Impressive feat to tower over noted dicks like Infantino, Weisinger and Lee

1/2 I respect Weisinger more. If editing is an art, he was better at it. He put more work/thought into his books. Weisingers ‘vision’ is more present in his books than Lees is in his. Id rather deal with a clear monster than a pretend friend who goes on to erase me after doing 0

2/2 Lee’s vision is ‘Gimme a coca cola tiger! Beatlemania. How bout a hot dog ya big lug’ etc etc. Id even prefer Kanigher to Lee, because at least it’s honestly hateful, not show boating nonsense disgusing empty ambition.

I'd give Lee's vision a *little* more credit than that--if nothing else, than just based on comparing what his best collaborators did w him vs without him.

His best collaborators did better work without him. There's no commercial comics better than 1970s Kirby and Ditko's lasting legacy will be the strange auteur stuff.

Gonna have to hard disagree (respectfully, of course!)... 70's Kirby is visually amazeballs but borderline-unreadable. FF is where it's at Kirby-wise. Ditko's stuff is always interesting, but again: Spidey, Strange is the deal imho.

I honestly find 1970s Kirby much easier to read than 1960s Marvel comics, in part because with 1960s stuff Kirby's art & Lee's post-facto balloons & captions were tugging in different directions, making it harder to read. Also, Lee's grating style.

Wait, what's this with the dialog balloons? Did Kirby letter his 70's stuff?
