I managed to avoid getting sucked into reviewing Pinker's Enlightenment squib-- or, really, any of the many books over the last three years I knew I would hate. (Life is short.) But it's possible that I'll have to do this one.

I've got no objection to being second choice behind her. I'd be shocked if she agreed to do it-- she's more sensible than I am-- but if you can get her to say yes, go for it.

I would love to see either of you (or both!) review this book. Reviewing bad (and in this case dishonest) popular work of this sort should be considered part of academic service. It's like a doctor refuting anti-vaxxers.

Sounds like Shapiro is doing what Nietzsche called "monumental history": sifting through the evidence for material to construct a just-so story to buttress a predetermined moral project. (I love him lumping Hume together w Rousseau and blaming the French Revolution on both.)
