But how many people watch Maddow? MSNBC is not Fox News in that liberals get their news from a variety of sources. In a country of 350 million, one cable news show has little impact.

Well said. The psychologizing of "the average MSNBC viewer" would be much more credible to me if the people employing that trope had done any sort of meaningful survey work to find out who this person "is." Grouping them in w/Fox ore even CNN viewers is sloppy analysis.

I don't need survey work. I speak from experience. The countless people who get their news primarily from that source and only want to ask me about impeachment, Mueller, etc. It happens ALL the time, wherever I go.

Oh, give me a break. I'm a reporter, not a social scientist. I read social science, but I also place value in what I see on the ground, all around me. And what I have seen is a LOT of rank & file urban liberals fixated on Trump/Russia and impeachment.

I'll add to this: it was that reporter's trust in what he was seeing with his own two eyes--yes, "anecdote"--that left me FAR less surprised than others by the white working-class surge for Trump. Because I kept running into Obama-Trump voters, for months.https://www.propublica.org/article/revenge-of-the-forgotten-class …

but not even MSNBC claimed that vote tallies were tampered with. that number is a reflection of how unaware people are generally.

What it shows is that normy Dems heard 1) something fishy happened in election 2) Russia was involved. So when option was put to them of vote tally tampering, they said yes. But, tellingly, Dems didn't campaign on this stuff.

That poll was a year ago so hard to know what was contributing to Dems answering that way. I don’t think it was a bunch of crazed Rachel Maddow fans as much as intelligence agencies all verifying Russia interfered with the election and that being interpreted different ways.

when the media and liberals go on about Russia meddling and interfering in the election, it's logical for normies to think they mean tampering with vote tallies, which has been the common way to meddle with elections.

And the fact is Russia did try to hack into voter rolls. That’s actually the part that’s most concerning and gets the least attention.

Precisely this. We could easily create equally embarrassing polls for socialists that makes it sound like crazy ideas are really important to them but I doubt @MattBruenig would consider that a deft take-down of the socialist movement.

Another point is actually how leaders in both parties and the intelligence agencies phrased it. They said Russia attacked our election and things of that nature. I think they should’ve said election *campaign* because it does make it sound like actual votes were tampered with.

I did see some claims that they had access to voter registrations prior to election day thus were able to deregister voters via demographics, but could you even realistically distinguish that from normal GOP fuckery without access to the servers?
