I think the column was a pushback against "enthusiasm" for the investigation—and while its target is I think a strawperson (the "naive MSNBC fan," I suppose)—I take offense to its motif because I remain unapologetically enthusiastic about completing this investigation.

Have to say, in my experience the "naive MSNBC fan" is no straw man or woman. I encounter them with great frequency in my daily travels!

I think the "naive MSNBC fan" does exist but would also note that based on mass protests & elections, many more Dems weren't watching MSNBC waiting for Mueller to solve everything but actively engaging in real world politics.

Hmm. "During one six-week period in 2017, the Intercept news site found that 53 percent of Maddow’s broadcasts focused on Russia, dwarfing discussion of any other issue."https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/rachel-maddow-the-lefts-powerhouse-on-cable-doubles-down-on-the-collusion-angle/2019/03/26/bd8701d0-4f36-11e9-a3f7-78b7525a8d5f_story.html?utm_term=.0592b4286156 …

But how many people watch Maddow? MSNBC is not Fox News in that liberals get their news from a variety of sources. In a country of 350 million, one cable news show has little impact.

Well said. The psychologizing of "the average MSNBC viewer" would be much more credible to me if the people employing that trope had done any sort of meaningful survey work to find out who this person "is." Grouping them in w/Fox ore even CNN viewers is sloppy analysis.

I don't need survey work. I speak from experience. The countless people who get their news primarily from that source and only want to ask me about impeachment, Mueller, etc. It happens ALL the time, wherever I go.

Oh, give me a break. I'm a reporter, not a social scientist. I read social science, but I also place value in what I see on the ground, all around me. And what I have seen is a LOT of rank & file urban liberals fixated on Trump/Russia and impeachment.

I'll add to this: it was that reporter's trust in what he was seeing with his own two eyes--yes, "anecdote"--that left me FAR less surprised than others by the white working-class surge for Trump. Because I kept running into Obama-Trump voters, for months.https://www.propublica.org/article/revenge-of-the-forgotten-class …

I remember your reporting in 2016 about the surprising people open to Trump -- it was an early warning sign.

And all the people I kept running into in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s who were voting for him despite NEVER having voted before. Who were thus invisible in pollsters' models. But yeah, that was just "anecdote," right?

Did any of these voters mention immigration as a concern? It’s the one policy area in which Trump offered a break from the status quo and the only one he seems to actually care about as president. Curious if people viewed it as a real concern or as evid he’d take on the estab.
