This is a strong and provocative @fmanjoo column on how obsession with Trump/Russia has distracted us from all the other factors contributing to the 2016 outcome. I'd push back on one point, though: it understates Comey's impact.

Yes! I'm a lifelong academic, living in GA. My circle DOES include lots and lots of ppl who watched MSNBC from '16-18 if only to keep from going fucking insane with despair. NONE of us thought Trump would be removed from office. We all got involved in the '18 election.

Hmm. "During one six-week period in 2017, the Intercept news site found that 53 percent of Maddow’s broadcasts focused on Russia, dwarfing discussion of any other issue."https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/rachel-maddow-the-lefts-powerhouse-on-cable-doubles-down-on-the-collusion-angle/2019/03/26/bd8701d0-4f36-11e9-a3f7-78b7525a8d5f_story.html?utm_term=.0592b4286156 …

That's fine as far as it goes, and it's clear Maddow was far, far too focused on this story, but this factoid isn't responsive to Jeet's point. Clearly Maddow's obsessive focus on this story *did not* lead to Dem partisans not engaging in real world politics.
