"Literature" (novels, plays, ambitious non-fiction) is the research & development wing of Hollywood. That's been true since 1930s, maybe earlier.
How many great, feasible research ideas get picked up by industry? R&D is for ideas, not all of which get used.

I was asking a slightly different question. I was asking about great literature. Also, I get your capacious understanding of R&D; however, don't R&D departments hope to make products. How many writers primarily hope to have their novels made into films?
