The change required ultimately demands a certain level of discomfort that our society just seems wholly unwilling to accept.

It's the czar as "little father" phenomenon. No need to actually do anything when there's a theoretical savior out there who will do it for you.

I too remember 2008 and 1992.

I kinda enjoyed imagining law enforcement was a safeguard against criminals holding office though.

You can see this exact same thing in the Remain movement in the UK, Leave broke the law, so the referendum is basically null & void. They want a 2nd referendum, not to change anyone's mind, but so those who realise their mistake, can atone by voting the right way.

I just can't follow you here. WHO is this class of people? The folks who supported the Watergate investigations? Or are you thinking across party lines—as with those who saw (and rooted for) Clinton to be actually humiliated by a pointless political investigation? /1

Simply put, these sorts of investigations are not common enough for anyone to generalize about classes of ppl who would substitute them for "politics." (When a party is completely out of power, as w/Dems in 2004, the Plame invest's were ALL they had—&then they took power in 06!)
