12. Pound's alliance Kaspers was a crude, vicious version of a trend that had more rarefied intellectual counterparts in exultation of Southern culture found in National Review, Modern Age etc. (Weaver, Southern Agarians, even The New Criticism).

Is liberalism in the US defeated? Committed suicide? Got it self corrupted? When was linked as is now with capitalism? Why do we have now capitalism at the same level in the narrative as the constitution? The founding fathers were against hording of power / money. What happened?

This is a fabulous essay… Thank-you for pointing it out. It’s a struggle to think of work outside academia that “gets” this (or work in academia that reaches readers this way).

This really is an extraordinary essay, Jeet. There was a year, maybe I was 23, when I read lots of Kenner & all of Davenport, and near the same time got interested in history of conservatism, but didn't fully connect the two. And have not though much about Davenport/Kenner since

Thanks for the kind words. Not many people in a position to appreciate the connections being drawn, but I think they are important.
