Briefly: "White ethnic" move to right turbo-charged by Cold War, which made Catholics valuably because of church's anti-communism. But as GOP became more religious (with rise of evangelicals), Jews remained a "minority" rather than useful white group.

This split is in the 1970s though, isn't it? War on Poverty, Civil Rights movement heading to the North, Vietnam, crime and riots, busing, etc. are all the boxes I'd check on "white ethnics" moving to the Right. Certainly isn't before 1966, look at the Kennedy election.

Yeah,
@dick_nixon spent a lot of time between 1968 and 1972 courting the white ethnics, with the help of Pat Buchanan and Kevin Philips. Doubt if Buchanan was interested in courting Jewish vote3 replies 0 retweets 10 likes -

Literally right now writing up for my book how Pat Buchanan killed public day cares in 1971. Like, it's him. No day cares, he stopped them. Why doesn't Buchanan get threaded through the rise of conservatism and have Buckley-level biographies? (I mean, I know why, but still.)

I'm on record as saying that the literature on the right vastly overstates importance of WFB & NR and should focus more on Buchanan.

There's a bio of Buchanan. I haven't read. Does anyone know if it's good?
