      2. The other thing though is that for the ethnonationalist right, increasingly ascendent in today's GOP, the "whiteness" status of groups like the Irish and Jews is still is dispute,

      3. You might think that the "whiteness" of Irish Catholics or Ashkenazi Jews was settled a long time ago in America, say 1945 at the latest. But in fact, there's an element of the right that has never been fully comfortable with that expansion of whiteness.

      4. This can be most clearly seen in the writing of the late Samuel T. Francis, the paleo-conservative thinker whose writings of 1980s and 1990s anticipate Trumpism in many ways. Francis always made a distinction between White Anglo Protestant core America & rest

      5. In his book Beautiful Losers (1994) Francis located the weakness of postwar Conservative intellectual movement in fact that white anglo-Protestant core was underrepresented and it was dominated by Catholics (Buckley) and Jews (Strauss).

      6. I don't think we should read too much into this, it's probably a one-off insult. Especially since Irish Catholics do in fact make up a big chunk of the Trumpian right (Hannity, Conway, etc). But still shows how underlying beliefs can sometimes come to the surface.

You can't meaningfully address this topic without the fact that nobody would be mentioning that he's Irish if he went by Bob or Bobby or Robert or Francis. The point is not that he's Irish, it's that he's even less Hispanic than Warren is Native American.

Is Bobby Jindal white? Because Bobby is a white name. Also, "Nikki" is not a Sikh name (as a Sikh I can say that fairly confidently).

The answer to your question may be obvious to voters, for reasons that are not hard to explain. I don't think it's healthy to obsess over this stuff, as lefty critics of Cruz, Jindal, & Haley have been known to do. But candidate identity is a core of D messaging.

Candidate Identity isn't a core GOP messaging, for a party that has only ever nominated white men to the presidency and whose current standard bearer is Donald Trump? Are you delusional?

Now, you're failing to understand the Right. In terms of identity politics, GOP voters are, compared to Dems, far less interested in the message than the messenger. We have plenty of recent evidence of that. I went through the most recent D primaries: https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/03/five-lanes-in-the-2020-democratic-field/ …pic.twitter.com/2zbMI2tkO3

So the fact that around 85%-90% of elected Republicans are white men is proof that GOP voters don't care about identity politics. Because white men don't have an identity, only POC and women. White men are just neutral or human. Cool!

You go to war with the candidates you have. Given the choice, plenty of GOP voters were thrilled to support Cruz, Haley, Jindal, Rubio, Sandoval, S. Martinez, & many other non-white-male candidates for GOV, SEN, etc. (to say nothing of nominees who fell short in the general)

By Jeet's standard, there is no world except perfect parity between parties in which identity politics wouldn't be the highest and best explanatory framework. "African Americans favor Democrats, meaning GOP is whiter, which means GOP must actively favor white people".
