If he were fully honest he would have to get some time even with cooperation, and with a pardon he's looking at about another year, assuming Trump loses, which I think he figures is likely.

He's dumb and crooked, but mostly interacted with other people who were dumb and crooked. This may have been the first time in his adult life where telling a bunch of stupid lies didn't work out the way he'd hoped.

It's easy to underestimate the extent to which always getting away with the first stupid lie that pops into your head dulls your sense of what risks are safe to take .
