Toby Young went to Oxford, thanks to the machinations of his father, a Baron (who coined, ironically, the term "meritocracy"). Young at age 55 is learning about the counterrevolutionary violence at the Vendée, one of the most famous events of the French Revolution. https://twitter.com/toadmeister/status/1105039636592762880 …

The fact he buys into the idea it has been "hushed up" when historians have been writing about it for 200 plus years indicates it is news to him.

Or it might indicate that he thinks historians had chosen not to write about certain aspects of the story, such as is alleged in the piece.

Thanks to@ProfDaveAndress for pointing out this disgraceful article that gives credence to far-right conspiracy theories and ignores copious scholarship and debate. https://quillette.com/2019/03/10/the-french-genocide-that-has-been-air-brushed-from-history/ …Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 4 likes -

Ah - I see. This late 18th-century event has received much scholarly attention since around the 1980s. But it's totally false to suggest it didn't receive as much attention for around 200 years (?).

It was famous even before 1980s. Trollope wrote a novel about it! It's getting lots of attention now.

Good. But I also hear that "Many older histories of the Revolution, written in periods when its legacy was severely contested, did downplay these slaughters."
