I'm a big fan of Bacevich. "Forever War" is also the title of one of journalist Dexter Filkins's books on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Enmities last centuries but wars, historically speaking, are usually short term affairs that lasted at most, with a few outliers, decades. And remember ancient warfare was seasonal. The war in Afghanistan has lasted almost 60 years from that point of view.
