Me (slack-jawed idiot): It's kind of insane that the longest wars in American history are still being fought in the Middle East, with no end in sight. You (smart foreign policy expert): Madness? This is Sparta!https://twitter.com/JSchanzer/status/1102630410117414913 …

"Forever Wars" is a term that chafes me like wet jeans. There are ancient cultures out there that measure conflicts in centuries. They take the long view of geopolitics. They understand that history existed before twitter.

With a little imagination I can easily imagine these wars lasting longer than the Peloponnesian tbh

??? Ancient culture declared peace all the time because war was too expensive to wage continuously, or conquered their enemies and actually won wars, also because wars were too expensive to not be financed by the last war's tribute.

there are literally zero civilizations that measured war in centuries. Even the Hundred Years war had truces one lasting a generation and was only grouped as a war by later historians

The smart take is that we need to model our civilization on the people who hadn't discovered steel and would shit in pots and dump it in the street.

I wonder if there's any correlation between living in an ancient culture that measured conflicts in centuries and dying of preventable diseases, living in abject poverty, extreme infant mortality, etc. J/k, I don't wonder about that at all.
