I will admit that I am not well-informed on current nuclear technology, but I will remain incredulous that it is on the table until someone explains to me 1) how the money-losing economics have changed and 2) who will be willing to accept the waste storage.

I think the basic case is if you want a zero carbon economy right now in absence of a solution to the storage problem for renewables you are going to end up with a nuclear baseload. If you take decarbonisation as your absolute priority, the then problem 1 and 2 have to fall back.
